Maui Community Correctional Center Overview

Maui Community Correctional Center, often shortened to MCCC, is operated by the Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It is a state community correctional center and jail, not a Kalawao County facility. DCR says MCCC houses male and female offenders awaiting adjudication or serving jail sentences. It also houses some prison inmates who are reintegrating into the community through furlough programs.

MCCC sits in Wailuku on Maui. For Kalawao County readers, that geography matters. Kalawao is on Molokai, public access to Kalaupapa is restricted, and official DOH materials describe Maui County mutual aid for police, fire, and EMS support. MCCC is therefore the best-supported practical DCR facility for a Kalawao-area state jail custody question, while still being separate from a Kalawao sheriff jail.

MCCC Capacity and Population

DCR reports provide solid MCCC facility figures. They should not be converted into a Kalawao County incarceration rate. The FY 2024 DCR annual report lists a design capacity of 209, operating capacity of 301, and FY 2024 average headcount of 195. The April 13, 2026 weekly DCR report lists MCCC head count 215 and occupancy 71.4%. The March 31, 2026 end-of-month report listed head count 212 and assigned count 218.

The facility was built in 1978 with an original 24-inmate capacity and later expanded. DCR says it sits on roughly 7 acres. Those facts help explain why the MCCC facility page is more than a lookup page: it is the source for custody, programs, visit routing, and service notices for the Maui-region jail channel. Visiting Someone at MCCC

MCCC visitation is controlled by facility rules, DCR procedures, and the current approved visitor list. The research found a visitation hotline but did not locate a stable public schedule that should be copied as current hours. Approved-list rules, ID screening, dress rules, attorney visits, and visitor-entry steps should be confirmed before travel.

MCCC Programs and Reentry

MCCC's official material emphasizes reintegration as well as detention. DCR says MCCC offers adult basic education, GED, parenting, cognitive skills, substance-abuse treatment, vocational training, work furlough, and extended furlough through the Maui Intake Service Center. It also describes a drug-court program for select pretrial inmates, sentenced felons, and parole violators, with in-facility treatment followed by treatment in the community.

The FY 2024 annual report expands the program list with Computer Essentials, Work Essentials, Finance Essentials, Aztec Alcohol/Substance Abuse, Aztec Domestic Violence, Ready for Work, Thinking 4 Change, independent study, post-secondary correspondence, NA/AA, anger management and domestic violence classes, BEST, pre-employment training for furloughees, Maui Health Services, and mentoring or community partnerships. These programs explain why MCCC can house both jail and reentry populations.

DCR also reported recent education activity at MCCC, including an August 13, 2025 news release about a GED graduation ceremony for five inmates. That kind of source does not change custody lookup steps, but it does show the facility's public role beyond intake and detention. A person searching for a Kalawao-area inmate should still begin with SAVIN and facility contact, then use the court record for case status.

MCCC Travel and Access

MCCC is in Wailuku on Maui, not in Kalawao or Kalaupapa. Visitors from Kalawao, Molokai, or the Kalaupapa peninsula should not assume a direct drive to the facility. Public access to Kalaupapa is restricted, and DOH/NPS rules can affect local travel. From central Maui, drivers generally approach Wailuku by Kuihelani Highway or Kaahumanu Avenue and then local streets toward Waiale Drive.

Official sources inspected did not publish visitor parking rates, a specific visitor transit route, or a specific ADA entrance for MCCC. That does not mean those options do not exist. It means the public page should not invent them. Call the visitation hotline for current entry, accessibility, parking, approved-list, and security instructions before making travel plans.

Kalawao-related travel questions can also involve more than the jail facility. Calling the wrong facility can cost time, especially when travel between islands is involved.

If the requested record is a police report, booking image, or historical document, the next step may be a UIPA request to DCR, DLE, Maui Police, or another maintaining agency.
